So, I was reading kroki_refur 's episode review of doom on 4x19 (Jump the Shark), because I find them amusing...and she talked about Sam saying that John may have "slipped one past the goalie"

Then she goes on to say how much she loves the fact that Sam made a football (soccer) reference and how it's continuity with the fact that Sam played soccer when he was 12 or whatever...

But dudes! I thought it was a hockey reference! I've ALWAYS thought that was a hockey reference!! MY MIND IS BLOWN!

Canadian!Me: There are other sports besides hockey?!!?
Well-Traveled!Me: My goodness...I'm Canadian.

...

What did YOU picture, hockey or soccer? (Uh, not counting those of you who just pictured the actual process of making a baby and didn't pay attention to the sports metaphor...)

I remember a line of dialogue from season 2 or 3 -- the first time they went to John's storage vault -- and I'm sure I heard the word "soccer" there while Sam was holding a trophy.

I meant that I thought "slipped one past the goalie" was a hockey reference...I know Sam played soccer. Sorry if that was unclear.

Hmm...ok, so far, it's definitely looking like a cultural thing then. Northern States & Canada = Hockey, The Rest of the World = Soccer. :-P

I'm not Canadian and I thought it was hockey. In fact, while I was reading this post I kept going back and thinking "So, where was the soccer reference?" *headdesk* Goalies, soccer. Got it.

Of course, I live in Northern Wisconsin so I'm not sure that gives me that different of a cultural perspective.

So, so far people who live in the northern states are thinking about hockey...hmm...well, maybe it's a "cold climate" thing and not just a Canada thing...or maybe it's a "close to Canada" thing :-P

Still, nice to know I'm not alone in not thinking about soccer AT ALL.

Well, I guess it would be weird if people from warm countries thought of hockey...but still, the fact that soccer didn't even cross my mind...I've ALWAYS thought that metaphor was a hockey metaphor.

Ah well...there are worse Canadian-qualities to have (and I'm sure I have them too :P )

I thought hockey, too, and I'm nether a hockey fan nor Canadian. I can picture a puck sliding, but not a soccer ball. That's just not the right verb for a soccer metaphor. I don't know what would be. Sneaked, maybe? Because he sure was sneaky about it.

Yay, ok, well that makes me feel slightly better - although I'm proud to be Canadian, I like to be aware when it's affecting the way I interpret things :P

But yeah, that's what I thought...pucks and ice are better imagery for slipping, rather than soccer balls and turf.

Hockey for sure. Soccer has a goalie? ;) I grew up in the upper peninsula of Michigan where there are two sports. Hockey for winter, fishing for the rest of the time.

See, we played soccer all the time in Canada...even in the snow - when we didn't have a hockey rink or sticks. I once even played soccer on ice-skates on a rink (note: be careful where you are kicking...accidentally kicking someone in the face has way more consequences when one is wearing ice-skates.)

Anyway, my point is...what was my point? Um...hockey is cool?

Ah Florida...I was really creeped out when I went there at Christmas time. It was weird to be walking around in shorts and t-shirt and having people sing Christmas carols.

But yeah, so, that DOES fit in with the North=Hockey, South=Soccer...but, that's no longer a universal rule based on some of the comments.

Just wanted to mention, that really there are more, who are not from either Canada or upper states of America, who thought about hockey.

I'm from Latvia – and I don' t consider it to be a "really cold country" even if we can play hockey outside in winter and for some time that game is rather famous here. And Latvia definitely is not "close to Canada” as you have put it in a reply before my post.

But for me too - that comment felt like one about hockey and not soccer :)

Well, I'm Canadian too, so I obviously thought hockey. No other sport exists. ;)

Yes, same here. It's much easier to "slip" one past the goalie if you are on ice.

Plus, aren't soccer goalies called keepers? Or is Quidditch? Haha...I'm getting my fantasy sports confused with my real sports.

Another Canadian who totally thought of Hockey. I agree with the "slipped" comment. Is why the hockey needs a goal alarm and soccer doesn't???

One issue though with North=Hockey, South=Soccer though, if that's the case, why are there NHL teams in Arizona and Florida? (Although most of their players are from Canada/Sweden/Norway/Czech/Germany/Poland/Latvia/Northern States/NotFloridaorArizona....)

I have never been able to figure out what the hell is up with those hockey teams. I don't think it really counts towards my North=Hockey, South=Soccer thing, because I bet if you polled the residents of Arizona and Florida you'd still get people thinking of soccer before hockey (except for the Canadian ex-pats)...the NHL franchises are just a money grab or something. I don't know. I think there should be a rule that if you don't get ice in the winter, you don't get to have a hockey team. But that's just me.
