An abundance of bookmarked things...

It is time to clear out my bookmarks - so, let's see what I have, shall we?

Vids

Here's a J2 vid from 2009. Now, I don't actually wear a tinhat, but I DO really like friendship. Anyone who has read my opinions On Love (and Slash) will know that I actually like real friendship a lot more than imaginary sexy-times. Anyway, I think this vid is cute, just from a friendship point of view: Jared & Jensen - A Love Story by Fated Cinderella.

A similar vid (also from 2009 - obviously I was into schmoopy piano-music friendship vids in 2009) by Melissa: Happy

For some reason, I bookmarked this interview with Jared from the 2011 ComicCon. I don't know why. Maybe I just thought he looked pretty.

Meta

I bookmarked [livejournal.com profile] missyjack's awesome "not a meta" about Camus' Sisyphus and Sam and Dean, because it is awesome. And I have always liked Sisyphus.

Fic

J2-AUs

The Quiet'verse is my favourite deaf!character fic ever (in this case, it's deaf!Jensen). For those of you helping me out on my Novel Project, you may recognize that I use a similar strategy for writing my deaf character as [livejournal.com profile] glassyskies does in the Quiet'verse. Unfortunately, this 'verse is a neverending WIP that is very infrequently updated (currently at 56 chapters) - that being said, it is adorably sweet and simple and very very beautiful, so I don't mind that it might never be done. I actually lost it for a while, and then rediscovered it and was pleased to find a few new entries that I hadn't read. So, maybe that's the trick - just lose WIPs for over a year, and then you get to rediscover them later.

Fics like Airborne by [livejournal.com profile] insane_songbird are a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm just a sucker for wing-fic (oddly enough, I still can't stand Dean/Castiel fic though). Also, a bit of a sucker for fantasy worlds. So, wing-fic in fantasy-land=pretty awesome. In this case, I like the fact that she made Jensen (with wings) a weird hybrid creature - in that he's not just a human with wings, he comes from a completely different culture and has a completely different brain chemistry. I'm not saying that the fic is perfect - as with most romances I read, I feel as though it could use a bit more emotionality - a bit more explanation as to why the two leads love each other (beyond looks)...she does a good job, I find, of telling us why Jensen loves Jared, but not the other way around. There's this awesome opportunity at the beginning of the fic to show them bonding and being domestic, and she kind of glosses over that in order to get to the action (which is crazy fun, so I don't blame her...I'm sure I have the opposite problem, where I over explain emotions and everyone gets bored.)

Fair Game | Foul Play by [livejournal.com profile] qblackheart. It a J2 Harry Potter Crossover/Fusion! You all know how much I love Harry Potter crossovers! Especially crossover/fusions that KEEP TO CANON! In this case, we have J2 as Hogwarts students - not during Harry Potter's years, but during Bill and Charlie Weasley's years...this way, the author can quite brilliantly give J2 a "normal" school environment, so that their own story doesn't become overshadowed by Harry Potter's story. Even when the war does catch up to them - (and of course it does) - it does so in a way where you aren't reading a plot that you already know.  This fic gets five stars from me. Also, she put Jared in Hufflepuff - and anyone who reads my Teddy and Nate stories will know that I have a strange love for Hufflepuff.

Sherlock (BBC)

Subliminal is a John/Sherlock fic by Speranza. What I love about this little fic is the style that she uses to tell the story from Sherlock's POV. She uses clever little subtext...haha...okay, that sounds weird. Just click on the link and check it out.

The Theory of Narrative Causality by anon is an epic story told on the Sherlock BBC Kink Meme (which really isn't a kinkmeme as much a fic-meme...just, if you are going by the SPN measure of kink. It's like taking a spoon to a nuclear bomb fight). It's a Sherlock/John AU in which Sherlock is a fanartist and John is a fanfic writer in the Sherlock Holmes fandom....yes, you read that correctly. It's pretty damn awesome - especially because whoever wrote it has a very good idea of how fandom works on livejournal...so it is also a portrait of ANY fandom on LJ and how people relate (or do not relate) to each other. It's epically long, but if you go down to the bottom, people have put links to all the parts...or you can click here

Let's Make a Bed Out In The Rain by [livejournal.com profile] theimprobable1 is bookmarked for some reason, so it must be a good read. It's another John/Sherlock - with John having broken up with Mary, and Sherlock being the secretly-in-love best friend who is there for moral support. I think I liked the way Sherlock was written, even though the Sherlock in the show is actually far too bold to act like this - I kind of like shy, quietly pining, Sherlocks too. On a completely different note, I actually thought the title was Let's Make a Bed Out OF The Rain, which I actually liked better as a title.

The Seat of Reason by [livejournal.com profile] thesardine is a great Gen piece. It's Mycroft and Sherlock as kids, which, in my opinion, is a great thing to explore. At any age, Mycroft and Sherlock are both immensely complex and, fundamentally, heartwrenching figures. This fic is very much in keeping with "Do you ever think there's something wrong with us?"  Also, bonus points for working in Aristotle in such a poetic and meta way.

Down the Pub with the Rugby Lads by [livejournal.com profile] what_alchemy is a coming-out fic, but unlike most coming-out fics you see - it's actually more true to real-life, where it's awkward and people say stupid things, even though they don't really mean to say stupid things - and if they DO mean to say stupid things, it's not happily resolved at the end of the night with the stupid people learning a valuable lessen. It's just awkward and a little disappointing, but fundamentally worth it in the end. (Wow, that sentence kind of describes life in general.) It is, of course, Sherlock/John.

Performance in a Leading Role by [livejournal.com profile] madlorific is probably well known by anyone involved in the Sherlock fandom. It's a Sherlock/John AU in which Sherlock and John are both slightly "washed up" actors (for different reasons) who get cast as gay lovers in a film that is not a gay film. It's a nice fic, because it plays to a lot of the things people like about RPS, but it's not RPS (though there are real people mentioned in it) - and on top of that, it has a great commentary on the state of gay characters in Hollywood these days. In that the only lead gay characters are only found in films that are about being gay.

*Spoilers for Series 2*
Folding, Unfolding, Refolding by [livejournal.com profile] tartancravat is a great post-Reichenbach Molly-fic. It's centred, of course, around Molly and what her life is like, and what her releationship with Sherlock is like. Fundamentally, though, it is about what it means to really know a person.

Action Man is another fantastic Mycroft+Sherlock piece by [livejournal.com profile] thesardine. While similar to the other piece by her that I linked above, I actually think this one is a little more refined - a little more poignant. Mostly, I love it because I really like the idea of Mycroft NOT knowing that Sherlock is alive. Maybe it's cruel of me, but there you have it. I like the idea of Mycroft grieving, and this fic does it beautifully. I also really like it because she has Sherlock so very young in the flashbacks, and she addresses the issue about how they would have known quiet early on that Sherlock had a slightly different brain - even from Mycroft. Mostly though, I love it because it really speaks to the odd relationship between siblings. I guess there's a bit of shades of Sam and Dean in here, where Mycroft isn't reflecting on his brother: the man, he's reflecting on his little brother as he knew him best.

I know, I know, WAY more Sherlock fic than Supernatural - I apologize to those who don't watch Sherlock. I tend to bookmark more Sherlock for some reason. Maybe because I read more WIPs in that fandom....or maybe because I visit more rec-lists? I don't know. I tend to look for Supernatural-related fic when I actually have time to read, and then read it right away, and then that's that...whereas for some reason I tend to bookmark Sherlock fic and come back to it later to read.

Also, Sherlock is a bit like the new kitten. It's not like I want to ignore the cat I already have, but DAMN that kitten is cute.

Dude, I only got to about half way through S2 with Merlin. What season are they even on now? Does anyone know that Merlin has magic yet? (This is basically why I stopped watching. It takes a particularly dense person not to have put 2 and 2 together when it comes to Merlin. He's not exactly subtle. :P) (Oh that and I liked Morgana, so evil!Morgana was not up my street.)

- Fleet of Foot - I have this favourited and I remember it as being really good (non-AU; outside POV)
- Ariel - this one I know I really really enjoyed (AU; immortal!Merlin)
- Drastically Redefining Protocol - this is one of the Must Read fics that I actually would rec to someone (like Last Outpost of All That Is - have you read that? It's wincest so I'm assuming you haven't but it's really really really good.) It's a modern royalty AU that works really really well.

My favourite Merlin/Arthur fic seems to have temporarily been taken down though. :( I also have a Merlin/Morgana fic that I really enjoy. And a load of RPS. I should also point out that I've been away from Merlin for... well since I got into SPN so... 3 years? 2 years? so they're all older fics. Also, I read a lot more RPS because... well, the same argument about magic above. Also because... I read a lot more RPS? WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT ME? :/

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have AU RPS fics that you like, you can rec me those too. I read a lot of RPS, but only AUs (and yes, I know technically ALL RPS is AU, but you know what I mean :P)

I don't think I've read Last Outpost of All That Is (probably because I don't read wincest - but you can throw me a link if you have it anyway. If it's really good, I usually don't mind the wincest.)

Merlin just finished airing S4. I'm spoiled for it, but I don't really care - Merlin isn't really a show that keeps you on the edge of your seat worried about what might happen next. And no, they still haven't done the magic reveal :P ...I actually find it hilarious, rather than annoying. I don't mind if Morgana is evil, but right now she's "secretively" evil - which is kind of annoying (also, it'd annoy the pants off of you, because Uther and Arther are like "who the heck is the traitor inside the castle?!?!" and meanwhile Morgana is standing under a neon sign that says "Traitor!" and has an arrow.)

How AU is AU? :P

The Last Outpost of All That Is (and by the same author and much more up you street [gen AU] Specific Relativity) If you mosey around her site, you'll come across really good fic. And I think there's enough variation in her.. genres? for there to be at least one story that you'll like. These two are my favourite. I've actually read Specific Relativity more times that Last Outpost because Last Outpost is LONG and also... mindblowing (imo), so one of those fics that you read sparingly. Like Someone You Might Have Been. God. And now I'm rambling.

OH AND BACK TO KELLIFER_FIC: read That Thing That's Golden. IT IS WINCEST. But it is also 1. short 2. well written 3. amazing 4. has beautiful art. :)

(aww having someone to rec fic to is such a novelty! :P)

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
An AU is AU if the two people involved aren't actors who work on a show called Merlin...or actors who USED to work on a show called Merlin...or actors who WILL work on a show called Merlin. :P Actually, I usually prefer it if they aren't actors...but I have read J2 where one of them is an actor (even on a show called Supernatural) and the other isn't, and those have been fine.

Thanks for all the recs! Man, I'm going to be busy for a while. I shouldn't have slept until 2pm today...

OK so!

- and I'm alive - Band!AU. Ok so fandom for me started wayyyyy back in like 2004 or something and it started with bandom. As such, I have a deep deep love of band AUs. This one is very good.
- Your Movements Are Irregular (But My Gravity Is Constant) - this is based on something I have never seen (Dead Like Me) but I enjoyed it nontheless.
- Be Resigned - this is an amazing amazing military AU based in the US Airforce sent out to Afghanistan. It was a "take your fandom to work" fic and gives a realistic insight to life in the armed forces. Made more interesting by the fact that if it's take your fandom to work, the author must have done a lot of this stuff. :/ Unfortunately, it's been deleted from most places and this is the only remaining working link. It's missing the last two chapters. BUT I urge you to give it a go anyway, because it's really is worth it. And if you like it, I know where to get a word doc for you. :P

Haha and usefully I have left a lot of the comms that my LJ mem links to go. So there are less links than I thought! But there you go. :P

Also, the fact that you are.. nearly 30? (Argh! Pleasedon'tbemadifi'vejustagedyouhorribly!) and woke up at 2 today makes me feel better about my life. No offence. :P

[/ficdump]

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the links! I will give them all a go. :) I've read a couple of BandAUs and have always liked them.

And don't be worried. I am exactly 30, so you actually de-aged me by putting the "nearly" ;) ...so yeah, if anyone ever told you that you only slept until 2pm because you were a teenager or something...um, they were full of it. Plus, sleep is DELICIOUS.

Mind you, I had this crazy dream where Hitler was making my extremely intelligent older brother complete a series of tasks... (I think it's because I recced all those Sherlock fics right before bed.)

IhaveanepicJ2bandAU. But! Enough fic recs. :P

Sleep for the win! :D Though that dream proper made me laugh. Hitler? Really? :P

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he was standing there in the shadows with his full uniform and his mustache and everything - and I was like "goddamn it, Hitler! it's my cousin's birthday party! This is hardly time to force my brother to conduct a series of chemistry experiments!"

(I have probably read the epic J2 BandAU... I read a LOT of J2 AUs).

Also, chemistry. Hahaha

Was it called Beautiful Disaster?

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Was it called Beautiful Disaster?

Possibly? Was that the one with drugs involved? I'm not sure I read the one with drugs involved, though I can't really remember now.

Jensen was in a band and in a relationship with Justin Hartley (whoever the hell he is). Jared was a roadie. The band was Jensen, Justin, Chad and Sandy.

Now I'm interested in the fic you're on about. Though... it might have been this one. Justin almost ODs in it. And Jared's ex Milo died of an overdose too.

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...maybe that IS the one that I'm talking about. I think the one I read had Jared as a roadie too...but I don't think Jensen was in a relationship and I don't think Jared had an dead-ex. We're probably going to have to find links or something.

Oh, I know! Jared was diabetic in the one I read.

[personal profile] franztastisch 2012-01-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Right. You need to find me this fic. :P And here's Beautiful Disaster while you're at it.

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. I MAY have read Beautiful Disaster. I'm going to have to read it again a bit and see if I did...because now I'm thinking that I somehow melded it in my head with the one I'm about to link you (which isn't nearly as angsty-sounding) :P

[livejournal.com profile] tour_verse has it's own LJ. So, you just have to find the beginning.
franztastisch: (Default)

[personal profile] franztastisch 2012-01-29 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah... Beautiful Disaster is heavy on the angst. But VERY good.

Ooh!! Nom nom nom. Band!AU. Thank you. :)

[personal profile] franztastisch 2012-01-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and about Merlin. I dunno. I just don't find it engaging anymore. It's like a really long introduction. By the time I was halfway through S2 I just wanted something to happen. It's not like Dr Who that has enough drive for you to ignore the fact that it's a "family" programme and therefore also intended for kids.

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh is that the problem? It's a kids show? Hahaha...I think I just like it because it's got the level of cheese from back in the Hercules and Xena days. So, yeah, not particularly engaging, but a fun thing to have on in the background while I crochet. :P
franztastisch: (Default)

[personal profile] franztastisch 2012-01-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not so much that it's a kids show, more that it's not a very... clever kids show. I wasn't brought up on cheese, so it doesn't do much for me! :P

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't brought up on cheese either - I was DENIED cheese, which is even worse, because now I overindulge when I decide to have some. :P

My older brother was always like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are STUPID", or "God, this Ghostbusters cartoon is HORRIBLE" and since my older siblings were in charge of the channel, and since I wanted them to think I was cool - I therefore could not watch the programs and decide they were stupid for myself...so they became guilty pleasures that I secretly watched on my own and then denied later. Basically, what I'm saying is that sometimes I watch things that are deeply flawed and juvenile BECAUSE they are deeply flawed, juvenile, and I know that my older brother would think less of me if he found out. (Hercules and Xena were the same...oddly though, I didn't like Xena. Too many lesbians or my young misogynistic self). I guess watching non-clever cheese is sort of like my teenage rebellion (that never ends).

But ah, yeah, that's a bit more information than was probably needed here. Sorry. :P
franztastisch: (winchester)

[personal profile] franztastisch 2012-01-28 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha I have no idea why I didn't watch cheese. Maybe because I had no older siblings whose footsteps I could follow, and maybe because I just watched cartoons (which, when made for kids, are the definition of cheesy). Or maybe I was as averse to cheese then as I am now. :P I did watch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles though.

In fact, I didn't watch a lot of things that people my age tend to have seen. For instance, I have not seen one episode of Buffy.

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen Buffy, I just didn't like it, which, for buffy-fans, is a far worse offense than having never seen it. I watched Angel for a bit too, same problem.

I later learned, of course, that I just REALLY hate vampires - so that was probably my problem with Buffy. (Though, in fairness, I do remember enjoying the Buffy movie that came out before the TV show...not sure if I'd enjoy it if I saw it again though.)
franztastisch: (Default)

[personal profile] franztastisch 2012-01-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah maybe that's why I've ever been interesting in Buffy. I don't get what's attractive about the undead. :P (read the kellifer_fic vampire story though, if you can find it. It's good. Oh, and can you tell kellifer_fic is one of my favourite writers? :P)

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'll try to find it after I read the wing!fic, but I make no promises on enjoyment. :P

I think I like kellifer_fic too. I think she was the one who did a really weird story that I liked once where Sam and Dean became one person.

It's not on her masterlist, it hasn't been updated in a while. Here it is if you ever get the urge.

YES YES THAT'S HER. Fantastic isn't she? READ EVERYTHING.
