Summary:

Adrien rubbed the back of his neck and didn't meet her eyes. "Sooo I kind of had a fight with my father. The part where the art room social scene comes in is, I told him I'm done modeling for anything but romance novel covers. And he doesn't believe me."

"...Romance novel covers," Marinette repeated slowly, imagination filling with Adrien in a charcoal suit waltzing with a woman in a crimson silk gown. Adrien in a pirate ship's crow's nest, poet shirt open to show his defined pecs and abs, with the black-and-red-garbed pirate queen. Adrien, blue-jeaned and shirtless and wielding a broadsword, with—

"The thing is—and this," Marc added, "is the part where Loverboy is getting all flustered—the thing is, romance novels, as a general rule, have two protagonists."

"Both of whom," continued Nathaniel while eyeing Marinette, "ought to be on the cover. Otherwise readers will get confused about the genre.

"Subtle," said Marinette. "Adjective. Antonyms include Marc and Nathaniel."

Making sense of the Quentin plot

"The Magicians" seemed to suffer from characterisation-whiplash in the last couple of episodes. Or did it?

By analysing Q's actions, I'm actually able to make an argument that is pro-Queliot. It's a theory that makes sense of his actions re: Alice. If you've managed to avoid spoilers to date about the dumpster fire that was 4.13, don't read on.

Looking for positive meaning. )

Musing on the upcoming "Magicians" season finale

Thoughts below the cut about the season's emotional journey and my/fandom's emotional journey.

This is, of course, about Quentin/Eliot, who I have shipped for ~4 years now. (There's a lot to say about the rest of the show but that is a different post.)

Here we go! )

But wow, what a ride it has been, being back in an "ongoing canon" fandom instead of being at peace with how a show ended and writing what ever we want, because canon won't change on us.

six sentence sunday

from swallow my doubt, turn it inside out (beautiful oblivion):
Adrien—he must, he thought, be Adrien at the moment; he could feel a needle in his arm, and the spot on his thigh where another had stuck him, and, well. Medical needle versus magical armor? He wouldn't bet on the needle. He fisted his right hand, thumb in, and drew the thumb out: yeah, no claws, no ring. Possibly no Plagg, though as soon as he thought that, he knew it wasn't true: something in his chest was fluttering, on the wrong side to be his heart. The familiarity of it, given both little jinnīs' ability to fly through things and their need to hide Adrien's being Chat Noir from everyone, and knowing how even with no reason Plagg remembered to stay, he hadn't left Adrien long? Yeah, Adrien's lung was probably the perfect spot for a nap.

Summary:

"What's this got to do with you wanting help breaking your heart of your boy?"

"He's not my boy." Ladybug leaned against him, one arm still holding her knees to her chest. "I'm not sure he even knows I'm interested. If he does, he's ignoring it with all his might." (Chat spared a moment to silently curse this callous little fool, whoever he was.) "But I can't think about much else."

(Callous little fool who didn't even want to know what a priceless treasure as Ladybug's heart was right there for his taking, if only he were willing to offer anything of himself in return. If only he were willing to notice her.)

"That's the problem, Chaton." She sounded so tired. "There's so much I need to think about, and all I'm thinking about is him. There's so much I need to do, and most of what I'm doing is increasingly desperate schemes to get his attention. If he'd just tell me no, I think I could stop. If I knew for sure he doesn't want me, it would hurt for a while, but then I could be done." She lifted their joined hands to her cheek; it wasn't a kiss to his hand, but it was tantalizingly close. "And then I could do my job better. Right?"

SFWA's boundary between short stories and novelettes, for Nebula Award purposes, is 7500 words. I have four published fanfics longer than that. One's the HP AU2 novel-length, one's the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang novella-length, and the latter is crap and I'm afraid to find out about the former. Two more clock in under 7.6K and I'm entirely comfortable fudging the line to call the one-shot a short story; the chaptered work, dunno how to class it precisely, but obviously I need to italicize the work title (though I don't think I have been) because the chapter titles get quote marks.

The piece in the middle, though. The 10.6K story I just finished in draft. (Which I can't break into chapters because the first two scenes total under 1.6K, the fourth and final scene is 2.4K, and there's just no good way to divide that!) Definitely a novelette. But do I italicize its title, like a novella or novel, or put it in quote marks, like a short story?

STAR WARS Celebration

I'm watching the STAR WARS Celebration livestream on and off today. Naomi Ackie is so adorable! It's always fun to watch the first-timers; they have never had this kind of attention before and they are so wide-eyed and excited. (Like Kelly-Marie Tran was last time.)

Also. Poe's outfit? I don't know what it is about scarves on men, but he looks HOT. Wow.

The Rise of Skywalker

Despite what's in this journal of late, I am, and always will be, a STAR WARS fan. It's in most of my usernames (not this one). But I wasn't that excited about the trailer because I am one of the people whose heart was broken by "The Last Jedi", meaning that I haven't allowed myself to get excited about the upcoming Episode IX.

(I'm still IN SW fandom; I pay attention to all the news, I watch the animated series, I listen to the soundtracks. But the new trilogy is a particular sore spot for me because there are things that I absolutely love - Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose - and things that make me so upset - i.e. how the OT characters were treated and how their quests of youth ultimately meant nothing.)

So I was a little "meh" about the upcoming trailer. (Okay, I still watched it drop live. :p) I said to my husband that the only thing that could excite me or surprise me was Luke coming back to life, but I certainly didn't expect to get an answer to that.

Well. The trailer DID manage to surprise me. Not the images, not the voiceover, but the last few seconds.

I did NOT see that coming!!! The surprise was cool. :)

Well done, SW marketing, for keeping that a secret. Now I am not sure how I feel about it. Excited but again...what does it mean for Luke and all that he fought for?

The Magicians 4.12

Spoilers, as always, below the cut. It seems strange to be so detached here before the cut, whereas on Twitter and Tumblr others (and I) are reacting all over the place! But my formative training in LJ/DW culture remains strong. :p

Discussion. )

Summary:

There's a Tumblr post by trickerydickerydock, in Venom fandom: superhero peril tropes and tell them where your boyfriend is, Eddie.

Adrien has been held for ransom before, and he knows the routine: be patient, don't annoy anyone who's armed, and wait for the police to find a solution that the kidnapper(s) don't want his father thinking is an option.

But this time Adrien wasn't the only one taken. He wasn't even the primary target; that would be Chat Noir's only known civilian friend, the only person he's ever paid attention to after hearing her declare her love for him. Since all anyone knows Adrien is to Ladybug is her celebrity crush, he might be an afterthought, or just an annoyance along for the ride. And he still has his ring.

Hawkmoth probably hasn't seen that or any Tumblr post. (Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra. Tell them where your boyfriend is, Eddie.) Has Marinette?

Magicians and Yuletide

Well, the Quentin/Eliot tag has now officially passed 1000 works on A03.

This is a good thing, but I'll never get to request them for Yuletide again! :( (The show version, that is.)

You know...

I had forgotten this particular agony of being in an ACTIVE fandom, where every week you can't wait to see the next episode, and you're constantly hanging on the precipice of seeing your ship sunk.

THIS is why I gave up active shipping for so long.

I can't believe "The Magicians" pulled me back into it and it's either going to be a glorious payoff (like we thought was possible several weeks ago) or the same old story. I am still hopeful that THIS will be the show that makes the change, but my hope dwindles with every week that passes and the story I want to see remains unaddressed.

(But it's still a fantastic show that found its feet in S3 and S4 has been wonderful too. It would just be less emotionally taxing if I didn't care about my OTP so much.)
