I just have the final two now to go, and I'm done S1. Pretty snazzy. Today's episodes are Provenance and Dead Man's Blood. One of them is interesting, the other one is not.
Six days in this one...and they are in upstate New York, but I didn't catch the name of the place.
It's the black&white disco motel! Yay!
I like how although Sam is supposed to be the "civilized" brother, he really isn't. He knows stuff about Art History, and he lived in the "normal" world for three years or so, but hand him a wine-list, and he's just as lost as the next blue-collar guy.
It's never good to cry on the first date Sam, good call not talking about Jess.
I love the break-in-and-burn-the-painting music in this episode. The whole sequence is great.
I also love Sam's "OH MY GOD!" when he sees the painting the next day. Haha, it's just hilarious, because usually these boys are so unfazed by everything.
I also like the conversation where Dean tells Sam that he's cranky and that's why Dean is trying to pimp him out. It's good.
EDIT: I just realized that this is the episode in which Jensen makes a mistake and calls Sam Jared. I had to actually go back to catch it, but sure enough, it's extremely clear once you know it's there. When they are discovering the differences in the painting, Dean says "Jared, check it out..." and then shows him how the razor was closed in the original.
Dean calls the graveyard a "boneyard." That's apt.
Sam: "It's like I'm cursed or something, like death just follows me around." It does Sam, you are putting Death's kids through college.
Sam: "This isn't exactly the first grave we've dug...still think I'm a catch?" - Ah hilarious, I love it when Sam tells jokes.
Sam: "What kind of house doesn't have salt? Low-sodium freaks!" - This is such a Dean line. I love that Sam says it. With my siblings our humour all bleeds together...we all have are own style, but there are always elements in common. Sam might not be the snarky one normally, but it's bound to come out every once in a while.
I like the little noise Dean makes as he turns away from Sam and Sarah at the end, right after saying that he'll go wait in the car...it's cute.
Why are these boys always telling these girls that they'll see them again like they mean it? Seriously, if Sam saw Sarah again NOW, it'd be like meeting a whole new person. Sam has really changed since S1.
Dean says "That's my boy" again! Man, once again, giving more legitimacy to my little fanfic I wrote with him saying that...man, I love Dean.
This episode review is just really a list of things I like, because honestly there's not that much else to say about it. It's a good little filler piece, where we get some Sam-"everyone I love dies"-angst, but other than that, boring.

Dead Man's Blood
Oh! The plot thickens! Poor Elkins...must die in order for John to get the Colt. But before we get to that, I should say that like the last episode with their Dad, we spend 3 days with the boys. The curious thing is that when we first see them, they are in Nebraska, heading EAST. That means that since Provenance (set in upstate NY) they have been West of Nebraska...which means that a fair bit of time must have passed between Provenance and Dead Man's Blood. Instead of continuing east though, they hear about Elkins in the morning at a diner, and head over to neighbouring Colorado (arriving at nightfall) to check out the place.
John always has a falling out with his old hunting friends. It seems he's burned a bridge with every single one of them. It's a habit of his. He did it with Sam too, I suppose...which is what all the arguing in this episode is about. We know that the fight with Elkins was probably over the Colt, though, so it's at least a little less of a mystery than some of the others.
It's true, Sam just wants to know too much. He is an information-whore. There's a quote I love by Nietzsche, that says: "A friend should be a master at guessing and keeping still: you must not want to see everything." Sam should really take that advice.
And John criticizes Dean's care of the Impala...OUCH. It's just because he is mad at Sam, and he's taking it out on Dean too...poor Dean.
Sam: "Are you telling me your cool with just falling into line and letting him run the whole show!"
Dean: "If that's what it takes"
I like how we can be left with the question of "if that's what it takes for WHAT?" To finish the job? To keep Dad happy? To keep the family together? It's so open ended.
Sam is so annoying in this episode. I have no idea why Dean would want the family back together if this is what it's like...crazy Dean.
I think the metaphor Sam uses is apt: Sam left, but John was the one that closed the door. Again, the burning of bridges...seems to be a nasty habit of John's.
I like Dean's reaction to John's trunk set-up. The little glance at his own mess of equipment in the Impala...John gave Dean the Impala, disappeared, and turned all orderly-cold-professional-killing-
Oh hey, Sam and John are alone together. You know, I had completely forgotten about this conversation! This changes some of the stuff I've thought before, actually. For instance, my annoyance at John for telling Sam to go get him a cup of coffee when they should have had at least one REAL conversation....but nevermind! Here it is! This is Sam's peace-making with his father, even though, it doesn't really solve their problems, since Sam still gives him a hard time and John still doesn't consider the boys as equals.
John: "This was never the life I wanted for you"
John: "After your mother passed, all I saw was evil, everywhere" - I think that's the crux of the matter. Sam complains about John treating them like children, but I think the problem is that he never treated them like children...always foot-soldiers in some war. The difference is that children are allowed to question their parents - it's called learning; whereas in the military, questioning your superiors is insubordination.
Sam: "We're not different, not anymore..." - but it's not just your Mum and Jess, Sam. You and John are crazy alike in personality, it's just that neither of you want to admit it because you both find the other one so annoying.
I love how John spent Sam's college fund on ammo. Gotta love the Winchesters.
Dean talks back! Accuses his dad of being reckless. Of course he'll speak up if he thinks his Dad is going to get hurt. It's cool how John is as selfish as Dean when it comes to not seeing his family die. He'd die first, not caring about the pain he leaves behind, in order to avoid having to bury one of his kids. And I mean that it's cool in an interesting way, not in a "what an awesome guy" way...because it's still selfish.
I like how the first time Dean talks back, both Sam and John are a little surprised, but they are already angry enough to mostly just roll with it. But then at the end of the episode when John comes in to talk to them, and even Sam is in "yessir" mode, Dean makes that comment "we saved your ass" and Sam gives him this look - this "Holy crap!" kind of wide-eyed look...and I don't even think it's surprise that Dean's spoken up to John. I think it's actually a "Dude, he's going to kick your ass" look. It's ironically perfect.
Way to go, Dean!

I had completely forgotten about that scene between John and Sam in Dead Man's Blood. This makes me forgive John a little for some of his failings.
Now, the question is...do I wait patiently and save the last two episodes for tomorrow...or do I watch them tonight? Hmm...so tempting...
