I was terrified when I heard they were bringing God into the show because I couldn't imagine how it could possibly be done in a way that didn't destroy the previous 10 years' worth of canon. I expected to cringe in dismay at how cheesy this late return of God would retcon everything that happened in season 5...

And Robbie Thompson wrote perfection...not only did Chuck/God make perfect sense in what he had been doing over the last 10 years--including his appearance as Chuck to the boys--but he took the character I hated the most in the entire run of the show, Metatron, and made me root for him!

I LOVE everything you wrote about how you interpreted Chuck's explanations, starting with this:

This actually makes a great argument for why God ISN'T in the story. Or rather, why God, in general, is hands off. If we see God as an author of a story that is not about Himself, then it makes sense that people cannot interact with Him. He can set up the story - ie: put a sword here, put an obstacle over there, but if he's writing a story where the characters are the ones that are supposed to be driving the action, then He can't interfere directly. Only indirectly.

And every such related comment through your whole rewatch. And kudos to Robbie for writing such nuance!

I also agree with your take on how Robbie fit the return of the amulet in, leaving it to the fans to supply their own head canon on where it was for the last 6 years...

Somehow Robbie gave us an episode that was Sam and Dean lite--though the boys' part was perfect brother-intense when Sam got infected and Dean was going to go with him!--an episode focused on 2 peripheral characters, one of whom was a villain--and made it one of the top 10 of the series!

Oh Robbie, come back!!!!
