I'm very excited to see what happens in the finale - though I'm also nervous as heck. I just want it to be an ending that I'll like.

But yes, the convenient non-deaths of Merlin...it's the classic case of Bond villains. Where characters that don't matter get their necks snapped immediately, but for some reason the villain has to set up an elaborate slow (escapable) death for the hero. :P
