See, the thing with Sam and Dean is that they can't die...well, they can't go to heaven and they can't go to hell...so, they could just cease to be (if that's indeed possible with anything other than the colt...and I don't much fancy a murder-suicide).
So, yeah, what I'd like (and maybe this is bizarre)...what I would like is for them to ascend to something more. Not in a "we're monsters now" kind of way though. Basically, I want them to become legends, gods in their own right - I'd like them to still be human - I mean, the message of the show (or at least S1-5) was fundamentally that of humanism. So, you couldn't take that away from them, but, I think it's possible for them to ascend to being like...the Gods of Hunters. If that makes any sense.
The way Edlund talks on the S6 DVD, it sounds like he's thinking along the same lines...he mentions Sam and Dean ascending to something more in the end than what they currently are. And I think if anyone can pull it off, it's Edlund, which is part of the reason I would really freak out if he ever left the writing staff. Mind you, according to Kripke and Gamble, there's already been an ending written for whenever that ending might occur...so, who knows!
