Only problem is that for the last 6 years I have been saving all my theatre tickets (they tend to be almost in the same size), so I can clip them together. And then if I had a new house/flat I would be cluttering up the space with them. So in my case this argument would be invalid. Those old tickets really are junk, as you said, and not like the theatre programs which at least look very different from each other and might be used for something one day (even if only for making a strange and individual wallpaper because of their bigger size :D ).
But everything that makes a person happy - can and should be used as a gift, no matter what size of a mess the present leaves behind :)
