I was about to say something very stupid about fjords and coastlines, but it was very stupid so I'll not. :P Is the Prairies the extension of that sort of... Iowa/whatevers next to Iowa/etc section of the US?

(Apologies. For a geography graduate I know very little about the US and Canada. And what I do know comes from fic and Bill Bryson. :P)
