I do think you have a point too - that Jo is inconsistent with the wands (and there are plenty of other things where she's made conflicting comments re canon, but then it would be hard to keep track of everything in the HP world!).

After my initial thoughts of 'that's not right' while reading the chapter, I went back to look at the wand lengths and she does seem, in general, to have a correlation with height - boys tend to have longer wands than girls (with exceptions of Bellatrix, who was tall, and Pettigrew, who was short).

But then there are those who break that, like Charlie and potentially Harry and Draco (for some reason I always thought of Draco as being taller than Harry, though I don't know if it's actually specified). And we also never know what height Harry ends up being, despite initially being small for his age; though I think Molly makes a comment at one point about Harry having 'shot up' like Ron over the summer. Harry's wand is the same length as his Dad's, who was also 'tall' - Jo seems to like to use that term a lot ;-) - so maybe the length is reflective of what Harry's height should be.

And, of course, Hagrid, like you said, having a really long 16 inch wand, indicates it's because of his size. My point is, that I think you have a good argument too ;-) And I most definitely agree that it was an excellent joke, so was well worth it, even if it wasn't strictly canon! (phew! I think that's enough of an essay from me!)
