At long last, I am continuing my Arthur+Merlin Meta into Series 5...

Part 1 (S1-S3)
Part 2 (S4)

Part 3 - S5 and the Finale )

I hope you enjoyed these meta fun times. If there's anything further you'd like to discuss, please comment! We can have even MORE meta fun times!! :)

This entire thing clocks in at 22,000 words. But, keep in mind, a lot of that is dialogue so that you know what specific part of the episode I'm talking about.

If you want to view/download the entire thing: click here. I apologize in advance for the font. I used the same one from my blog, but apparently that looks quite cartoony when in a word document. I don't know why. Suggestions for better fonts are welcome.

This season, Gatiss and Moffat decided to tackle the big stories while also theme-ing the episodes. So, we get "Sherlock and Love", "Sherlock and Fear", and "Sherlock and Death."

I actually see these episodes as ALL "Sherlock and Love" or at least Love, Love-Fear and Sad-Love, because really, what's death besides the really really depressing part of love?

Standard Disclaimer: As usual, I talk a lot about love, and being "in love" etc....and, as usual, I don't necessarily mean romantic love. If you are a huge shipper though, you can feel free to pretend that I mean the sort of love that leads to sexy-times. Personally though, I'm a stickler for canon, so I actually just mean love without the addition of sex. I tend to side with Moffat on this one: “Fancying someone is about how you spend your night. Loving someone is about how you spend your life.”

Scandal in Belgravia!

And there we have it!

I'm not sure when I'll get to S2. It takes me ~10 hours to do one episode, in case you were wondering...and I do sadly have to work for a living. :P

Let me know if there's anything you desperately wished that I had talked more about...or explained better...or had a different opinion on...

Back to awesomeness...as we conclude the first series of Sherlock :)

Standard "Love" Disclaimer: I talk about "love" and being "in love" in this rewatch, but I don't actually mean romantic-love - though, you are free to interpret it that way if it makes you happier. :)

Warning: Although this is a rewatch of 1x03, I DO make passing references to events in Series 2. So BE WARNED.

I'd be lost without my blogger. )

Sherlock Rewatch - The Blind Banker
(Only ~6,600 words this time, yay!)

So, I always remembered this as a sub-par episode that had very few redeeming qualities. In other words, I was CRAZY harsh on it. When I showed Sherlock to one of my friends, I skipped it entirely. But, the other week I showed Sherlock to another friend, including this episode, and well...I've...changed my mind? Shocking, I know. But, while this episode has its issues and isn't as good as the other episodes, it's still really good television.

I'm Sherlock Holmes, and I always work alone, because no one can compete with my MASSIVE INTELLECT! )

Next up...The Great Game. I'm not sure when I'm going to get to it. It may have to wait until August, or I may be able to do it next week. It depends how long it takes and how much time I have. Lately, I have not had very much time.

This meta comes in two parts, because it's 10,700 words.

(To be fair though, I used 14,000+ words for ONE Sherlock episode, and this Merlin meta is covering S1-S4, so I think I've done quite well with not being too wordy.)

The End.

I'm going to be very busy for the next couple of weeks, but hopefully I'll find time to watch The Blind Banker sometime in July.

Edit: Almost forgot to link the full rewatch on AO3 is available for those who want to download to portable readers (or those of you who just like AO3 a lot.)

hells_half_acre: (Sherlock)
This rewatch will be posted in 3 parts over 3 days, because it clocks in at ~14,500 words.

For those of you who read my Supernatural Rewatches, you will be very familiar with the format. However...

Special Sherlock Disclaimer: I talk a lot about love, falling in love, being in love, etc. in this rewatch. If you choose to read this as romantic love, that's your choice, but it's not what I meant. I am using "love" and "in love" in an asexual sense. Basically, I am talking about love in its purest form (as I see it), divorced from sexual attraction or lust; however, you are, as always, free to interpret things differently than I do.

Possible suicides, four of them? There's no point sitting at home when there's finally something fun going on! )

Behold: My very first fanvid ever...it's not perfect, but hopefully it's passable?

Song Title/Vid Title: Supernatural Type Thing
Artist: Stone Temple Pilots - Sex Type Thing.
Category: Meta
Characters: Sam and Dean Winchester
Warnings: This vid is about sexual assault - so, yeah...enter at your own risk
Summary: An exploration of sexual assault against Sam and Dean so far.

AVI versions:

Notes: There aren't any songs out there about sexual assault against males, so I had to make do. Though, by using this song, I did get an awesome opportunity to compare Sam's body to a sexy dress.

The Nature of Death on Supernatural
(AKA: How my former love of the anime Bleach affects my Supernatural world-view)

Yesterday, I was talking to someone in comments on "To Being Half a Person" about S6. They expressed disappointment that God brought Cas back at the end of S5, but (so far) did not bring Gabriel back.

This got me thinking that I should post how *I* understand the way death works on Supernatural. To do so, I'm going to be using screen caps from this anime I used to watch called Bleach. You don't need to know anything about Bleach to understand though....

Illustrations and Thoughts Here )

But that's just my opinion...

hells_half_acre: (Bloody)
Ok, so as many of you know I have a fascination with sexual-assault (in particular sexual-assault on males) in Supernatural. I also don't seem to take as much offense as other people do when the show mentions the word "rape" or molests some girl (I say "some girl" here, because I find that no one much complains when one of the guys is molested....and that's totally meant as a burn on the fandom, btw.)

Anyway, I've talked about it a lot on this journal - but today I clicked on the wrong bookmark in my drop down menu and ended up at [livejournal.com profile] amonitrate 's journal...and dudes, [livejournal.com profile] amonitrate  has some great meta that I only read every couple of months.

Anyway, I scrolled down instead of clicking on the correct bookmark, and I came across this piece she wrote:

Torture and Rape in Supernatural Season 6 (so far)

And man, she basically has the same opinion as me, only she knows WHY she has it and is far more articulate than I am about explaining it. So, yeah, I really suggest those of you who are interested in this kind of thing too go and read it.

Let's talk about this awesome cap from Unforgiven (6x13) while I wait for my pasta to cook:

Check out that lighting! What is it trying to say? THINK ABOUT IT.

Sam is pleading to be trusted by a women who, very rightly, suspects that he had a hand in her husband's death...during an episode that very much continues the debate: Was Soulless!Sam still Sam? Or is Sam another entity all together.

And it's all nicely encapsulated in this one image...

On the one side, we have Sam's earnest and open face - innocent and scared and pleading for help. On the other hand, we have the side of Sam's face that is hidden in darkness, tinted in blood red.

Interestingly enough, back in 6x11, Soulless!Sam spoke of Sammy as though he were a different person - as though bringing Sammy back would kill Soulless!Sam. Now that Sammy is indeed back, he believes that Soulless!Sam was still him - that the fact that his soul had been separated from his body meant nothing and it's HE who has to make up for Soulless!Sam's ruthless cold-heart.

So, are Soulless!Sam and Dean correct and Soulless!Sam was a different person...or are Sam and Bobby correct and Soulless!Sam and Sam are NOT different people?

I think I've been thinking about this wrong. Soulless!Sam and Sammy are two different people...but they are two different people that together make up Sam. And I think that's what we see in this one image. We've got the cold-hearted ruthless body and the warm-hearted kind soul of Sammy (and as loved ones do, Sammy is the version of Sam that Dean sees the most)...and you put them together and you get Sam, who is capable of both (as we've seen in flashes throughout the years, most prominently in Mystery Spot and a lot of S4.)

Of course, maybe this is me being biased, because I love characters with duality...(like Remus Lupin and Sirius Black)...anyway, no matter what your theories, you gotta admit, that's a really awesomely lit scene.

Some of you might remember that I posted a rant once about feminism and Supernatural - more specifically, about how I didn't see a problem with the way Supernatural conducted itself. I originally flocked the rant, because I didn't want angry comments from people who didn't agree with me, but felt that they could sway my opinion if they yelled enough (they cannot...yelling just makes me hate you).

Anyway, in that rant, I mentioned how I thought Supernatural was actually pretty gender-equal because more often than not, the boys were just as objectified as the girls, or as powerless as the girls...and overall I thought the show did a great job of showing that either gender can be strong and either gender can be weak.

Today, I was putting off working by reading [livejournal.com profile] missyjack 's LJ. I haven't friended her for some reason - instead I enjoy just going to her journal occasionally and seeing what she's been up to.

She has this great piece about how Dean is both the possessor and the object of the Male Gaze in Supernatural. If you do not know what the Male Gaze is, [livejournal.com profile] missyjack  has a link to one of my favorite comics that explains it.

I suggest you check it out!
